Location

Le Lavandou

Le Lavandou is a colourful, laid back fishing village on the Cote d’Azur, just 25km from St Tropez. Unlike St Tropez however, it is not so ‘fashionable’ as to have driven prices up as has happened in many places along this stunning coastline. Restaurants and cafes are affordable, there is a sense of community and there is nothing more pleasant than watching the locals play boules in the village square.

Le Lavandou boasts 12 beautiful beaches within its town limits, all of which offer different attractions. From sheltered swimming bays, watersports, great beach restaurants, exciting rock scrambles between beaches or just good ‘building sand’ for sandcastles, there is something for everyone. All the beaches are stunning with views out to the islands of ‘Les Iles d’Or’, accessible by boat to explore.

In addition to the beaches Le Lavandou offers a pretty town centre with lots of boutique shops, a 1.5km ‘board walk ‘ to the neighbouring port of Le Faviere, plenty of watersport activities, a little train and free activities during the summer months, including beach Zumba, Aqua aerobics, Beach volleyball and more.

If you are a cyclist you will be thrilled with the tarmacked disused railway line running 15 km to the next town of Le Cavaliere, as well as the extensive route of cycle paths running back along the coast to Toulon. There is also easy access to the hill roads through cork forests to sleepy Provencal towns. For keen walkers and hikers there are plenty of walking trails and coastal paths to enjoy too.

Le Lavandou is situated between St Tropez and Hyeres on a quiet and beautiful stretch of coastline. At the foot of the ‘Maures’ or cork forested hills behind, it is an ideal destination for cyclists and walkers as well as avid beach goers. The crystal clear waters are warm enough to swim in between May and October, whilst the coastal paths and beaches are beautiful and accessible all year round.

The stunning ‘Iles d’Or’ islands are a few kilometres off the coast of Le Lavandou and are well worth a visit by regular boat trip from the port. Fantastic for walkers, cyclists or divers, the marine reserve is a welcome ‘extra’ on your trip.

The nearest large airports are Nice and Marseille, both about 1.5 hours away from Le Lavandou. Sometimes there are also flights into Toulon Hyeres airport which is just 40 minutes away.

The nearest train station is Toulon. Regular buses connect Le Lavandou to both Toulon and St Tropez and the stop is at the top of our road.

12 Beaches of Lavandou

Le Grand Plage

The beaches, although geographically close together, are all unique as they all have different coloured sand! Some are big town beaches, some are hidden gems, but they are all easily accessible and very beautiful.

Bormes les Mimosas

The beautiful hill top village that sits above Le Lavandou, just 2km away. Worth spending a day exploring the windy streets, multi coloured houses and stunning views of the coastline. You can enjoy an energetic uphill walk to the fort that crowns the village, relax in one of the bars or enjoy some shopping in the lovely boutique shops there.

Restaurants and Bars

There are many restaurants and bars in Le Lavandou, around the port at Favieres and in Bormes les Mimosas, but here are a few of our favourites in the town centre, just a few minutes walk from our apartment.

Restaurant La Favouille
Delicious food served on a flowery terrace overlooking a bubbling fountain in a pedestrianised square.

L’Auberge Provencale
A warm welcome is always forthcoming from the friendly owner of this typical Provencal restaurant. Set in a beautiful old building on the pedestrian street.

L’Envie
Bar and tapas – delicious cocktails and light bites, served in a contempory bar, often with live music.

Bars

Bar au Centre
Centrally located bar, great for people watching.

Calypso Bar
Overlooking the popular boules pitches, ideal for a sundowner

Chez Mimi
Also great for boules watching, looking out to sea to watch the boats coming back from the islands

Acapulco Cafe
The best bar for the last of the sun, overlooking the boats in the port.

Palais de Glace
Not a bar in actual fact, but a fantastic Ice cream parlour, offering over 50 homemade ice creams.

Getting There

By Car

Driving from the UK

If driving from the UK, it is approximately 12 hours from the Dover ferries or channel tunnel to Le Lavandou. It is a straightforward motorway drive direct to Toulon. On reaching Toulon take the signs to Hyeres. Follow the dual carriageway through Hyeres centre and out towards St Tropez and Le Lavandou. Follow signs to Le Lavandou until you reach the Dolphin Tail roundabout on the outskirts of the town centre. When you reach the the Dolphin Tail roundabout, take the second exit towards St Clair onto the D559, Ave de Provence. Take the second right, Rue de la Rigourette,  just after the bus station. Then turn right but bear left in front of the pharmacy, this is the Avenue des Martyrs. We are 100m along there on the left just after the fishmonger’s shop. There is limited off street parking here for unloading. You will see the house with a metal gate in front of it.

Parking

There is onstreet parking at the property out of season, but is  and limited to half an hour from May to October. There is 24hr parking just a few hundred metres away, reached by turning left at the end of the road and heading out along that road for a couple of hundred metres. It is on your left.

By Bus

If you catch the bus from either St Tropez or Toulon, the bus will drop you at the bus station at the top of our road. Head down the hill until you come to the fountain. Turn right and cross the road, the house is immediately in front of you, opposite the optician’s shop.
